The rain was
a surprise, but I knew I'd captured a magical, yet typically
tropical moment when it came clattering down. For me, nothing
says south seas idyll quite like rain on a tin roof.
It was a brief shower carried in on the breeze -- the clouds
didn't bother to show up, electing instead to lurk behind
the mountain before later dejectedly drifting off to sea.
Outside my falé were sparkles and rainbows in the
long light of late afternoon.
I kept recording for several minutes while I wandered outside
and let the cool, sunlit shower wash me down. This is how
it was that lost day in May of this year.
About a week ago I pulled the moment from my digital recorder,
relived it in my headphones, and wondered how to best present
it in a viable (and musical) way here.
Many tracks were recorded and scrapped, from delicate piano,
to the plaintive yearning of Mellotron strings and flutes.
After working these different angles I found that sequencers
presented an interesting electric counterpoint to all the
rain-washed riches of the field recording, and it was this
way I finally chose.
With layers of effects and a delicate mix, the synthesizers
now rise gently in the breeze and fall like waves on a far,
otherworldly reef -- an electrorganic sliver of
sound, or at least that's how it sounds to my ears!
Presciption:
For best results take this piece with headphones just before
sleep, in a darkened room, with eyes closed, lying down.
If used correcly it'll bring warm dreams of lost afternoons
and brief forgotten rain falling upon far away green shores.
