In the summer
of 2002 Sean Smith and I were working as Trecento when one
of his online friends asked other musicians to have a go
with a ballad he had recorded. "Nick" from Australia
had put down vocal and acoustic guitar tracks. Soon, "Dave"
in New York cut drums and electric guitar.
Sean and I "trecento-ized" it by adding Sean's
piano and bass, and my synth and mellotron. We also expanded
it by attaching a new intro and outro.
This mix was originally distributed through our old mp3.com
page and, later, through trecentomusic.com. When Trecento
folded last year the mix was taken offline. Sean never had
a version of the track and asked for one in March of 2006.
When I pulled it from the archives I thought it needed further
work.
My production style has changed dramatically over the years,
and it was important that I update the sound of "Miss
You" to my new standards. The old
mix now sounds as if were recorded off an AM radio with
a bar rag over the speaker, whereas the new mix is far more
dynamic and crisp.
To keep things fresh, a new lead-in has been added as have
some other little surprises.
To be fair, the piece is never going to be perfect. A couple
of data errors present in Nick's mix propagated as loud
crackles late in the mixdown of the song. These are irreparable.
Nick's foundation for the piece was never more than a basic
demo. That being said, it stands as a testament to the power
of online collaboration as musicians span the globe in the
name of creativity and inspiration.
Since the time of "Miss You" Nick Storr became
the lead singer for The
Third Ending.
